Mission
The New Orleans Council on Aging (NOCOA) exists to protect the rights, promote the well being, and enhance the self-esteem of New Orleans elderly by generating opportunities for self-reliance and independence.

The New Orleans Council on Aging is a private, non-profit corporation which serves as the Area Agency on Aging for Orleans Parish. The agency is responsible for insuring that a comprehensive and coordinated assortment of social, recreational, educational, and nutritional services are provided to persons aged 60 and over in the City of New Orleans.

Subcontracted Services
Legal Assistance: The Advocacy Center provides a continuum of legal services to protect the legal rights of seniors and to ensure that they experience the highest degree of self-determination. The purpose of legal assistance is to aid older adults in securing their rights, benefits, and entitlements. Older adults often need advance directives, wills, or protection from exploitation.

Legal/Advocacy services provided include: Community Legal Education, Outreach Intake, Direct Client Services, Law Reform Activities, Legal Advice, counseling and representation by an attorney or other person acting under the supervision of an attorney, and coordination with other legal service providers.

Repairs on Wheels Program: Volunteers of America (VOA) of Greater New Orleans provides light home repair to allow the elderly to remain safe and independent in their own homes. The participant provides the materials and VOA provides the labor.

The program has three components: Home Safety Surveys, Minor Home Maintenance, and Minor Home Repairs. The program offers an initial safety assessment and minor home repairs, such as fixing locks, carpentry, plumbing, window work, interior painting, and the construction of handicapped ramps. The goal is to keep older adults in their homes, living independently, for as long as possible.

Personal Care/Home Health: The Medical Team, a licensed home health agency, provides personal assistance, stand-by assistance, and supervision for older adults with the inability to perform some of the activities of daily living. Some of the services provided to seniors are bathing, grooming, and assistance with other areas of daily living. Personal Care services ease the burden of care for an older adult and/or their caregiver.

City of New Orleans Dental Progam:
The New Orleans Health Department operates and administers a dental program for the homeless and the elderly. The program provides low-cost basic dental care for people 60 years of age and older who live in Orleans Parish. Please contact (504) 658-2785 for an appointment or to request additional information.
